Toilet repair isn’t a job for the faint hearted though; whether it’s an issue with the flush or a problem with a leaking tank, lots of things can go wrong and it’s important to be able to pinpoint the problem if you need to call a plumber.

Here are just some of the plumbing issues you might experience with a toilet.

Toilet repair for leaking or running water

There should not be a constant sound of running water coming from your toilet, or water running down the toilet bowl a long time after flushing.

If there is, a toilet plumbing expert will tell you that you have a problem with leakage.

Toilet plumbing and blockages

One of the most undesirable toilet repair issues, a blocked toilet can cause an overflow and in the worst case scenario, it could flood your bathroom with unclean water from the toilet.

The causes of such blockages can be either due to the materials being flushed down the toilet, or because of an inadequate flushing mechanism.

Toilet repair techniques for poor flushing

If your toilet isn’t flushing correctly, there’s a chance it can be rectified simply by lifting the lid in the cistern and examining the tank for common toilet plumbing problems.

These are some simple ways to diagnose minor toilet plumbing issues, but if any significant repairs or replacements need to be carried out, it’s always best to consult a professional.

At Property Contractors 247, we have a fully qualified team of toilet repair technicians who can spot and treat all types of toilet-related problems for you.

In this blog post our expert plumber walks you through removing and old close couple system toilet, preparing the space and installing a new toilet system.

Remove the lid on the cistern

The first step is pretty easy. Simply remove the lid to the cistern and have a good look inside to familiarise yourself with all the parts. Your new cistern will probably come with the internal parts assembled but it's always better to have a working knowledge of how they operate to make your toilet work.

Turn off the water supply

Once you’ve turned off the water supply it's a good idea to flush the toilet to check. If the water supply is turned off properly the cistern shouldn't fill up again when you flush.

Disconnect the water supply to the toilet itself.

With a pair of adjustable spanners slacken off the nut. Unscrew it fully and remove the pipe from the cistern block. Use a small towel to catch any excess water that might drop from the pipe.

Remove the cistern from the wall

Most toilets have a couple of screws to secure the toilet cistern to the wall. simply unscrew them to remove the unit.

Remove the toilet waste pipe (soil pipe) from the toilet.

On a lot of toilets the pipe going out the back of the toilet is possible on a flexible quick.

Remove the toilet

Most toilets are secured into place by a couple of screws and a bit of silicone. So we need to remove the screws and cut the silicone and you should be able to move the toilet out of the way.

Prepare the area for the new toilet

Now your old toilet is removed it’s time to give the floor a good clean and remove any debris that's in the way.

Installing your new toilet

Now it’s time to install your new toilet. The procedure is almost the reverse steps of the removal but with a few extra things to bear in mind.

Fix the toilet to the floor

The first thing you’ll want to do, before actually securing the toilet in place, is to get the new toilet bowl into the position you want it to be in.

Fit the soil pipe

Before you fix the soil pipe on the back of the toilet it's a good idea to get a silicone gun and run round the inside of the pipe.

Put the cistern back on

Make sure that any seals that she supplied with your new toilet are in place to avoid unwanted leaks.

Sort out the water supply

This could potentially be the trickiest part of your new toilet installation, depending on the length and positioning of any pipework coming from your new toilet and also the pipes that are already fitted from your old toilet.

There are several recognised advantages of switching to LED lighting. Studies show that LED bulbs are 90% cheaper in running costs than your existing spotlights, and with that being said, an average house with 40 spotlights converted to LED lighting will save you a possible £500 per annum in running costs.

Converting from spotlights to LED lighting also has the advantages of:

Efficient

LED lighting bulbs tend to last for years and years so there’s no need to worry about changing the bulbs.

Safe and Secure

With other lighting transformers can sometimes break and the bulb itself can overheat, this isn’t the case with LED lighting. They also provide a reduced level of CO2 emissions in comparison to other bulbs.

Great Garden Lighting

Led lights can also be installed in the garden making a very attractive feature.

Windows play an important role in both the aesthetic beauty of your home and a functional role when it comes to energy efficiency. Your windows are also an important element for defining the style, curb appeal, and ultimately the home’s value.

When to Replace Windows in Your House

Most professionals agree new windows should last between 15 and 25 years before you need to begin thinking about replacement.

Window construction and technology have improved immensely in the past couple of decades, and today most companies producing vinyl replacement windows offer a 20-25 year warranty.

If your windows are nearing this age or even older, it’s probably time to think about replacing them. If you’re not sure how old your windows are, there are some telltale signs to watch for letting you know it’s time to replace your old windows.

Five Signs It’s For Replacement Windows

There are some fairly obvious signs it might be time.

1. Warped, Damaged, or Broken

Often, minor damage like worn-out weatherstripping or a broken lock can be easily repaired. However, if you have double or triple pane windows and the glass is cracked or broken, or if the frame is warped or soft to the touch, replacement is probably a better option. Soft frames can indicate rot or water damage which if left unattended can cause serious and costly damage to your home.

2. Fog Up, Drafty, or Won’t Stay Open

Condensation build-up between multi-pane windows means the seals have failed, allowing moisture to infiltrate between the glass.

Once the seals fail, any inert gas used to make the window energy efficient is gone. If you feel a draft when the windows are closed, several reasons could be causing this including poor insulation or faulty seals.

Windows that won’t stay open or are difficult to open may be a result of balance issues caused by improper installation.

3.Leaky

If your windows are leaking when it’s raining, much like drafty windows, they’re causing you to waste energy and increasing your utility bills.

Leaky windows can also lead to more serious problems like structural issues if the framing rots due to getting wet. In fact, leaky or drafty windows can cause your energy bills to significantly higher.

4.You Have Single Pane Windows

Single pane window technology is dated, inefficient, and offers no soundproofing qualities. If you can hear a lot of outside noise, feel drafts, or cold when sitting in front of the window it might be time to replace your single pane windows with new double or triple pane technology.

5. Visible Damage

Your home’s windows are one of its most prominent features and help to define its style and curb appeal. If they’re worn, fading, or visibly damaged, old windows detract from your home's look and can lower its value. Replacing your windows is a great way to give your home a facelift, make it more energy-efficient, and create a more comfortable and inviting interior.

If you’re in need of replacing your windows, Property Contractors 247 can help you in any window problem. We’re proud to be accredited by Master Builders in London.

WHERE DO YOU START WHEN RENOVATING A BATHROOM?

PLAN A BATHROOM LAYOUT AND STICK TO IT

When it comes to bathroom renovations you'll want to avoid making unnecessary changes to your existing sanitaryware layout the fewer alterations you make, the lower your plumbing costs will be.

APPOINT AN ELECTRICIAN EARLY ON IN A BATHROOM REMODEL

You will need to find an electrician for any rewiring, lighting schemes and the addition of an electric shower or shower pump. Chat to one before any building or plumbing work starts so they can plan their jobs into your bathroom refurbishment schedule.

Make sure you choose a registered electrician as you will get additional protection should something go wrong.

A SIMPLE BATHROOM RENOVATION IS EFFECTIVE

Keep the design simple in your bathroom remodel and avoid curves, steps, ornate decorative mouldings and non-essential details or ornamentation. The simpler the design, the more cost-effective it will be to fit out.

REMEMBER YOU CAN HAGGLE ON YOUR BATHROOM RENOVATION COST

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with asking for a discount, one of our favourite bathroom remodel tips in fact, it’s built into some shops’ official policies. Even the big high street DIY stores will be open to negotiation on prices.

THINK ABOUT WATERPROOFING THE SPACE

Tile backer boards can be used to line bathroom walls and shower enclosures. They are 100 percent waterproof when taped and jointed, and act as insulation too.

A BIGGER SPACE WILL NEED MORE HEAT

If you are extending the bathroom space in your remodel, don't forget that this will mean a larger area to heat. Re-assess existing heating and upgrade the heat output if needed with a more powerful towel heater or radiator.

REMEMBER TO INCLUDE PLENTY OF STORAGE

Nothing can ruin a nice new room faster than clutter, so don't forget about bathroom storage. Our feature is full of handy solutions. Use storage furniture and baskets to keep everything out of sight.

Always choose materials that can withstand the conditions of a bathroom. You can contact us anytime for bathroom renovation, we are here to help you!
